I’ve been playing Age of Empires since the late ’90s—back when a dial-up connection was part of the experience—and it’s been a constant source of enjoyment ever since. I still remember jumping onto the MSN Gaming Zone, sitting in the lobbies chatting with other players, waiting for games to fill up. There was something simple but great about that—just talking strategy, meeting people, and getting into matches with whoever was around. It’s been amazing to see Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition breathe new life into a classic, bringing a whole new generation of players into the fold while still holding onto what made it special. I remember watching replays of the top-ranked players years ago, trying to understand how they made everything look so effortless. Now, you can jump on Twitch and watch players like Hera and The Viper showcase that same elite-level skill live. That said, the game can be tough for newcomers. With so many long-time players carrying years—sometimes decades—of experience, it’s easy to feel outmatched early on. But if you stick with it, stay patient, and keep learning, the payoff is worth it. Once it clicks, Age of Empires II becomes not just fun, but deeply rewarding.
A game that passes the test of time (2+ decades) aka still receives updates, DLCs, and is, in my opinion the best RTS ever, can only get the best praise. Where Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 failed, Age of Empires 2 thrived. While spin-offs like DOTA 2 created its own genres, AOE2: DE still manages to rile up the fan base, "overpowered" strategies coming along with the new DLCs get nerfed to keep the game balanced. Balanced with 50+ factions/civilizations is really hard. Kudos to the devs! 14!
They rolled out a patch that completely broke game audio for me. I've played more than 50 games that have in-game voice chat. The AoE devs managed to implement it in the stupidest way possible, something I haven't seen in any other game. It desparately tries to enable the "call" mode on Windows that forces my headphones into phone call mode, thus runing sound quality. I have a dedicated mic plugged in: does not matter. I can change devices, turn the feature off, turn the device off in the Windows settings. No. It just decided that it wants my headset Mic and now the sound is unusable. What an absolutely abominable change breaking a decent game. They have not fixed it for 2 months now.
