If you loved alien isolation, this is a must play, if you see it on sale for 60% off or more grab it, you cant go wrong. Playing this with the gamma settings properly calibrated so darkness is actually just pitch black was an incredible experiance, it made me value light as a resource more then any other game ive played and made me commit to memory the halls and rooms of the bunker.
This was a big change of pace for the series, and it mostly stuck the landing for me. I really enjoyed the immersive sim elements added to the traditional formula. Figuring out different ways to avoid the monster and rats, different ways to open doors, and managing resources and time/fuel was all great fun and added a layer of mechanical depth that has never been in the series. I also loved the design of the bunker and the shift to a fully explorable environment connected to a hub area versus the linear, non-returnable areas in the previous games. It gives you plenty of time and incentive to learn the ins and outs of the environment, to the point that I could make my way back to home base in pitch black from several key places. As expected from Frictional, the writing is really strong, as well as the voice acting and sound design. I do wish there was a bit more story, as it felt like I pieced together what had happened leading up to the start of the game within the first two hours of play, and not much new happened beyond that point other than the gameplay elements required to reach the conclusion. I enjoyed the connections back to Rebirth that are revealed the deeper you go, but it's all over so fast that it felt like a bit of potential had been squandered in just how short this game is. Overall, this was a very fun and very frightening addition to the Amnesia universe. The increased focus on gameplay depth was a welcome addition, and I would love to see it carried forward into future games. While I do wish the game was a bit longer and had a bit more to say with it's story, I can't complain too much, especially at the cheap price it goes for on sale.
Very good survival horror game, short but highly replayable.
