A hack-and-slash RPG featuring a reactive narrator, various unlockable weapons, weapon upgrades, practice mini-games and optional difficulty modifiers, set in an imaginary world in the aftermath of an uncertain apocalypse, in which the player embodies a teenager with a troubled past as he and the narrator work together to rebuild the world out of a persisting hub called the Bastion.

Runs well on modern hardware.

Bastion is one of those rare games that just feels special from the first few minutes. The narrator’s constant, reactive commentary is brilliant — it makes every run, every mistake, and every victory feel like part of an unfolding legend. The art style is gorgeous, the music is phenomenal (especially the songs), and the combat is super satisfying with deep weapon customization via the Forge. I played this years ago (first achievements popping in late 2011/early 2012) and put in enough time to finish the main story both ways (The End + The Beginning), do New Game+ (Calamity Kid), fully upgrade weapons, collect pets, complete a good chunk of vigils, and tackle the tough Shrine Idol challenges — including the full 10-idol runs on multiple dreams (Just Like That, Calamity All Around, Ashes in the Sky, About the Author, etc.). That stuff ramps up the difficulty significantly and forces you to master the systems. Pros: • Incredible atmosphere and storytelling • Fluid, fun combat with great variety in loadouts • The narrator (Rucks) is an all-time great • Short but dense — perfect length for what it is • New Game+ and Score Attack add replayability Cons (in 2026): • Controls and camera feel a bit dated now • Some platforming sections can frustrate • Once you’ve 100%‘d the dreams and upgrades, there’s not a ton left besides grinding Score Attack for the last achievements If you like action RPGs with strong narrative, excellent world-building, and a bit of challenge, this is a must-play. Supergiant knocked it out of the park with their debut. It’s aged gracefully thanks to its style and writing more than its mechanics. Playtime on my account: Enough for ~46% achievements (11/24) with the hard optional content done. Solid 15-25+ hour experience depending on how deep you go. Verdict: 9/10 — A true indie classic.
This is a beautiful game. Artistically, one of the best, with vibrant visuals and gorgeous music. Mechanically, its follows with the art and compliments it in a way I could never have understood without playing the game. This game is worth it.
Bastion is a classic indie game experience whose somewhat-jank combat is carried by a compelling world and a fantastic soundtrack. The story is told entirely through narration, which is very well acted. I'd recommend it.
