one of the best VR games and amazing mod support.
The only complaint i have about this game is not being able to keep the heads of my enemies as trophies in my inventory to leave at my home when i finish the dungeon.
Blade & Sorcery is routinely unpolished, half-baked, disappointing, and awkward, and I think everyone needs to play it. Is it a good RPG? No. The pacing is grind-heavy, especially getting new spells. The story is easily ignored, uninteresting if pursued, ends with a limp anti-climax, and is wholly untethered to the gameplay. Is it a good adventure? No. Every new movement it asks of you is hopelessly clumsy until you learn to account for its jank. Game mechanics are inadequately explained somewhat often. The larger environments are labyrinthine yet surprisingly linear, and navigation comes down more to memorizing the procedural rooms than being led anywhere or exploring. Is it a good arena fighter? No. The survival and sandbox modes leave much to be desired, using the (very well designed) maps poorly and having less variation in between runs than you would expect. The AI is prone to strange and simplistic behaviors which makes the complex swordplay this wants never really viable. Is it a good game? Absolutely. For all its faults (and there are many!) Blade & Sorcery is fundamentally strong and engaging. It is clear technical debt in the backend has prevented it from developing as well as it wanted to and has left some obvious scars and growing pains, but what is here is a fantastic time. Crystal Hunt promises more than it can deliver on, but it delivers an excellent guided tour through B&S's arsenal and magics and makes you sit with your new options for a little to let you appreciate and experiment with them in a way its sandbox mode simply could never. Its plot is poor, but immaterial. There's new things to see just often enough to make exploring its world exciting on its own terms, and I was getting surprised with a new layout or weapon all the way to the end (though only just enough, I don't see myself doing a second playthrough). The combat is janky, but consistent, fun, and expressive. There's endless ways to challenge yourself and interesting synergies and techniques to discover with its spellcasting, and there is a basic satisfaction to swinging its melee weapons that just never gets old. This isn't even considering the excellent mod support that lets you refine it to suit your own tastes. The game is marvelously innovative exactly as often as it is thoughtlessly misguided, but it comes out for the better on average and will serve as a pillar of the medium in the long run. More VR games need to pay attention to what Blade & Sorcery is up to, because what it gets right it gets so very right.
