blasphemous II offers everything a sequel needs; it’s a massive step-up from the original across the board. the first few hours didn’t stick with me as strongly as the rest of the game, especially compared to the original’s opening. you get 3 weapons, each rooted to the environments of blasphemous II, with weapon-restricted platforming that’s a genuinely cool addition. each weapon specialises in a different damage type, catering to a different playstyle. the abilities on offer are also a major improvement; I felt far more compelled and incentivised to revisit earlier areas once I picked something new up. that pull is much stronger this time around. as a whole, blasphemous II feels a lot more like a traditional metroidvania than the original. watch gameplay online and it can look hard to follow, a lot of crazy stuff happening at once, but then you learn to do that crazy stuff yourself. the original blasphemous, by contrast, is a unique metroidvania in how much it differs from the genre’s conventions. blasphemous II falls more in line with the rest. I had a lot of fun with this one. everything great about the first game excels again here; amazing boss designs, amazing world design. from a gameplay standpoint it’s a clear step-up, while the series’ indestructible charm stays fully intact. from a narrative standpoint it’s a bit lackluster. I’m also mixed on the new cutscene art style; I really loved the pixelated cutscenes of the original. the new style is genuinely cool and well-animated, and it makes you think what they could pull off as a mature animated series. I’m torn, because I adore those original pixelated cutscenes and I can’t fully let go of them. credit to them for trying something new, though. apologies for the sloppiness of this one; lost the full length review and this is me going off what stuck with me most.
I found for the most parts the exploration and combat really fun but who decided that having the player wait a minimum of 30 seconds (forced cutscenes with dialog, the dialog can be sped up) every time they want to fight the last 2 bosses is beyond idiotic.
