Buy this game and become the imaginary parkour man who used to exist only in your head whenever you got bored in the car.
A fantastic spiritual successor to Jet Set Radio that nails the look, gameplay, style, and sounds to create a fun new product. Play as Red, part man, part machine, working with a local graffiti gang to take over all five boroughs of New Amsterdam by tagging over existing graffiti from rival gangs in order to gain rep, then engage in a crew battle performing tricks via skateboard, rollerblades, or BMX bike to get the highest score in two minutes. Songs, graffiti, clothes, and skins for your board, blades, and bike can all be found around levels, sometimes hidden or locked behind a challenge for you to complete. As you paint over tags from other gangs, accumulating reputation, you can participate in three different challenges in order to unlock the crew battle for that borough; although completing these challenges will alert the local police, causing them to deploy, and your heat rating to rise, bringing out more and more types of police units. Red isn't the only character you can play as, being able to change up to a different member of your crew by dancing in specific zones to change things up. There doesn't seem to be too much of a difference in terms of abilities or stats of any kind when it comes to changing characters, only the smallest tag graffiti changes to match the character. Beating a crew will unlock their unique dance moves for you to use when changing characters, which is fun, but not something I really used at all. Tricks are very much so in the Tony Hawk school of thought, grinding down rails, performing grabs, manuals, slides, and different foot-flips in order to rack up as many points as possible before breaking your combo. Performing different tricks themselves seems to not matter as much as building up your multiplier as much as humanly possible, making it so the AI can't catch up at all to your score. Leaning into corners will give you a boost of speed, augmenting the boostpack you have strapped to your back. I'm really vibing with the general art style and use of colour used to create the characters and world of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. Graffiti looks absolutely fantastic, offering a variety of simple to tag options in different sizes for spots all around the map. Music is a huge part of the charm of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, being hit after hit of funk, house, and smooth low vibe tunes to keep you company the whole way through. This is a soundtrack I enjoyed from beginning to end, surprisingly not getting sick of any of the tracks regardless of how many repeats I had. If you are a fan of the old Jet Set Radio, then Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a must buy I would say. Newcomers will have an excellent experience as well, as it isn't a terribly difficult game, being quite accessible in terms of gameplay. This game was clearly inspired by and shares a lot of elements with Jet Set Radio. However, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk brings a lot more to the table than just being a throwback. The gameplay is bursting with personality and flair. The level design is a sprawling city best explored at high speed while chaining together trick combos to build up street cred. The city is basically a huge playground of trick opportunities and graffiti spots. The skating here isn't exactly as complex as Tony Hawk or other skateboarding games, but this more simplistic design allows you to simply cruise along instead of sweating over button inputs. Tagging these spots does earn you heat, which is somewhat similar to Grand Theft Auto's wanted level system. When the city's militarized police force sends their mechanical robots, snipers, and giant mechs kitted out with skater seeking missiles, you'll feel the difficulty spike somewhat. The game is still quite easy overall. The music itself really steals the show here. Tracks from the iconic Hideki Naganuma and various artists inspired by his music make this electrofunk soundtrack one of the best OSTs out there. I highly recommend this game. It's fun as hell.
