Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a 2007 first-person shooter game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is the fourth main installment in the Call of Duty series. The game breaks away from the World War II setting of previous entries and is instead set in modern times. Developed over two years, Modern Warfare was released in November 2007 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. A Wii port, developed by Treyarch and subtitled Reflex Edition, was released in 2009. It was followed by two sequels that continue the storyline: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Modern Warfare 3 (2011).

Runs well on modern hardware.

It's 2026 and I never played any CoD games, started with this one, just completed the main single player campaign and it was awesome!
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my VR mod gameplay here: https://youtu.be/_zb1bxii1Mw Yes, you can now play Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare in VR with the latest VR mod that includes stereoscopic rendering, 6DoF headset tracking, motion-controller weapon aiming, physical scope support, VR HUD placement, and campaign-specific compatibility fixes (most weapons have manual reloads too). Yeah, you can now aim your weapon in VR and the sights are perfect in VR (except for the sniper scopes). You can play comfortably seated as well (full locomotion with snap turning). On my RTX 5090, I was getting mostly 90 fps with only some minor frame rate drops. I tested mods with several weapons and they all mostly worked (except Sniper). Game looks gorgeous in VR. It's so much more immersive and fun to play in VR. It's the definitely way the game should be played. Play it in any other way and it is the inferior way. Playing this 2007 game in VR just shows that VR is the present and future of gaming. So you either buy yourself a nice PC and a VR headset and enjoy the VR modding scene, or you will be left behind enjoying inferior experiences.
I bought this game! Call of Duty 4 is still my favorite COD game of all time which I know many people much prefer the newer games or even the old ones but this one is awesome for what it is and is a good point of comparison for where the series would eventually end up from once being a propaganda machine for the United States military to now being what is essentially militarized Marvel for man children. Don't get me wrong, the writing of this game is definitely more grounded and "realistic" than the Modern Warfare reboot trilogy but it has Hollywood action and missions that are straight up propaganda... Buuut it also has genuinely interesting missions with moments that breaks the facade of how honorable it is to die for your country. I know all of this stuff has been talked about ad nauseam since the game's release but it's what makes this game so special to me and after replaying this campaign again it's still just as fun as I remember and I recommend giving the campaign a replay. However I can't extend the same recommendation to the multiplayer because it's straight up filled with cheaters and RCE exploits but Activision doesn't care. Don't touch the multiplayer.
