Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a 2025 role-playing video game developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive. Set in a dark fantasy Belle Époque setting, the game follows the members of Expedition 33 as they set out to destroy the Paintress, a being causing the yearly Gommage, where those at or above an ever-decreasing age are erased from existence. In the game, the player controls a party of characters from a third-person perspective, exploring areas and engaging in combat. Its turn-based mechanics feature real-time aspects such as quick time events and timed actions in combat.

Runs well on modern hardware.

It is super rare that a game leaves me feeling the way this one did. at first I thought it was going to be overhyped so I came in with cautious optimism... this game now stands among my favorites of all time... clashing for the top spot even. Very likely to be my game of the decade. Not once was combat tedious, not once was exploration boring, not once did I feel like I was ever making mostly meaningless choices... or just picking something just because it made number go up(ok... stat allocation is just that... but that is all stats do!). I WILL be 100%ing this, just did the mainstory ending 1 of 2 so far.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 starts off with one of the most gripping openings to a game I’ve ever experienced and only continues to ramp up from there. At its core, it tells a deeply emotional story of loss and grief in a beautifully realized, unique world. The combat system for this turn based jrpg takes familiar elements from different games, both classic and new, and combines them into an addictive system. The addition of dodging and parrying keeps you constantly on your toes. Learning enemy attack patterns to execute the perfect counter is immensely satisfying. At the moment, I can’t imagine there being another jrpg as engaging as this game. The game oozes confidence with every passing frame. From the music and world building to the progression system, enemy designs, voice acting, and dialogue, all exceptionally good. Knowing that this is coming from a small studio of largely inexperienced developers makes it all the more remarkable. The only negative experience I had was related to pacing around the middle of the game. In that instance, the game felt a bit bloated and repetitive. However, this is a minor gripe in an otherwise incredibly well rounded, fun game. This game has easily cemented its position among my favorite games of all time. As a final piece of advice, do yourself a favor and go into it knowing as little as possible to get the absolute best experience. FOR THOSE WHO COME AFTER Score out of 5
★★★★★
