Cuphead is a 2017 indie run and gun game developed and published by Studio MDHR. The game follows its titular teacup-headed character and his brother Mugman, as they make a deal with the Devil to pay casino losses by repossessing the souls of runaway debtors. In the game, up to two players control Cuphead and/or Mugman to fight through several levels and boss fights; the game does not have a rigid narrative structure. As the game progresses, the protagonist acquires more power and abilities, eventually facing the Devil. Players, however, can only equip a limited number of these abilities at a given time.

Runs well on modern hardware.

Cuphead is one of those games that smiles at you… and then punches you directly in the soul. Let me be honest: this game is hard. Not “a bit challenging,” not “you’ll get used to it” — no. This is the kind of difficulty that makes you question your reflexes, your patience, and sometimes your entire existence . You go into a boss fight thinking, “Alright, I got this,” and two seconds later you’re staring at the restart screen like it personally insulted your family. The most frustrating part? Those accidental hits. You’ll be doing great, dodging everything like a pro, feeling like a gaming god… and then boom — you get hit by something tiny, something you didn’t even see, something that probably existed just to ruin your day. And suddenly you're MAD. Not just annoyed—full emotional damage. You sit there thinking, “There is NO way that hit me.” But it did. And now you’re starting the whole fight again. Amazing. But here’s the thing… this is where Cuphead does something special. The difficulty is painful, yes, but it’s also weirdly sweet. Every time you lose, you feel like you were this close. The game doesn’t feel unfair—it feels like it's daring you to improve. And when you finally beat a boss after 20, 30, or maybe 50 attempts… the satisfaction is unreal. It’s the kind of victory that makes you sit back and go, “Yeah… I earned that.” Now let’s talk about the design, because wow. The bosses are absolutely stunning. Every single one feels unique, creative, and full of personality. From their animations to their transformations, it’s like watching an old cartoon come to life—but one that actively tries to destroy you. The attention to detail is insane, and you can tell how much effort went into making each fight feel memorable. The world map is just as beautiful. It’s charming, colorful, and full of life. Walking around between levels feels like a break from the chaos, even though you know the next boss is waiting to humble you again. The whole aesthetic of the game is just on another level—it’s not just a game, it’s a piece of art that happens to hate you. And yet… you keep playing. That’s the magic of Cuphead. It frustrates you, it makes you angry, it pushes you to your limits—but it also keeps pulling you back in. Because deep down, you know you can do better. And when you finally succeed, it feels incredibly rewarding. In short, Cuphead is brutally difficult, occasionally rage-inducing, visually breathtaking, and strangely addictive. It will test your patience, your skill, and your sanity—but if you stick with it, it might just become one of the most satisfying experiences you’ve ever had.
(100% Achievements Unlocked on Expert Mode & DLC) Cuphead is a masterpiece. I know everyone says that, but it’s true—this is easily in my top 100 games of all time. I enjoyed it just as much as Hollow Knight, which is high praise. While Expert Mode was incredibly frustrating at times, I eventually got S-Rank on all the bosses. Will be interesting to see what Studio MDHR bring next. A Cuphead sequel would always be welcome! 10/10
WARNING!
The game looks cute, but it's not actually cute at all! It has a great soundtrack and amazing graphics. The developers even drew all the frames by hand! That's freaking amazing! Just remember my words: you won't find this game cute after playing it!
