Detroit: Become Human is a 2018 adventure game developed by Quantic Dream and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was released for the PlayStation 4 in May 2018. Quantic Dream released a port for Windows under license from Sony in December 2019. The plot follows three androids: Kara, who escapes her owner to explore her newfound sentience and protect a young girl; Connor, whose job is to hunt down sentient androids; and Markus, who starts out as a caretaker for an elderly man but later devotes himself to releasing other androids from servitude. The player's choices affect the course and outcome of the story.

Runs well on modern hardware.

I have played hundreds, maybe even thousands of games, over the last 30+ years, and this is easily in my top ten. It is so easily in my top ten that outside of Doom Eternal and Ninja Gaiden Black I cannot even tell you what else is in my top ten off the top of my head. The controls and camera are beyond aggravating at times, and the QTEs often suck, but I find the game's strengths outweigh the faults. The narrative is what makes the game, but the voice actors did an amazing job as well, and the music serves its intended purpose very well. (Edit: Playing Beyond: Two Souls, which I bought as a result of enjoying Become Human, makes me appreciate the QTEs in this game, since you at least get clear button prompts in this) I almost never 100% a game. While I did get all the achievements, that is not what I refer to. I played through numerous times, changing countless decisions along the way, in an attempt to see everything the game has to offer. If you play the game, I HIGHLY recommend playing the game without guides. I also recommend letting the game unfold naturally; just play the game the way you think it should be played and let consequences happen.

Even in 2026, it's still a delight for the eyes and the ears. Immersive graphics with perfect voice acting. This would be one of the easiest game to adapt in a movie. It's an interactive story shared between 3 main characters, each remaining independent for most of the game. It allows to show different perspectives. An antagonist point of view with Connor as investigator. A more intimate point of view with Kara as a mother. And a broader point of view, with Marcus, as the rebel leader. The game is divided in scenes, presenting various and detailed locations. Each scene alternates between the story of the three main characters. There are various types of scenes, such as: investigations (my favorite), pursuits, dialogs, fights, ... Even if, individually, a scene may seem slow, the alternation of sequences and characters gives the game a good pacing. Although it's an interactive story, it's still a game. Therefore it's possible to fail to reach a desired outcome for, a dialog, a pursuit, a fight, ... Some choices are really well made. However some choices are unintuitive. So yes, sometimes I left and reloaded to do better. And sometimes I realized that where I thought I had failed, it was actually a forced outcome... Sometimes even the wording of the choices was too ambiguous or misleading. The story is very interesting because nowadays AI is used in all fields, even more so than when the game was released. The beginning of the game shows with great details the impact that the AI, and more specifically the androids, can have on the society. It's well made, and credible enough to be scared about the future development of the AI. The strength of the story is its three independent main characters. I really liked Connor and Kara and their stories. And their voice acting was perfect (I played in French). Marcus was also interesting in the beginning, but in my opinion, he changed far too quickly and unnaturally. The more the story progressed, the more I found Marcus to be a caricature, and it's a shame because it was the character with the biggest impact in the world of Detroit: Become Human. Consequently, I didn't find that the ending shaped through my choices was realistic. I nitpick a bit here, but sometimes I found the story development lacked some nuances, the choices obeying a dichotomous logic. Ex: When Connor is with Hank, every choices and dialogs must be emotional to please him, and with his counterpart, Amanda, every choices must be logical. Even the main menu is interesting. It is hosted by a female android. She is speaking with us and sometimes more: after playing for a few hours, she proposed to answer a survey. It was funny and unsettling to see what the other players have answered ^^ Overall, it's a perfectible yet very immersive adventure and I can easily imagine myself playing an hypothetical sequel.
