i love this game. the only reason i stopped playing was because my boyfriend couldn't survive a day in the wild. damn those city boys
Don't Starve Together: A Review Imagine if Tim Burton designed a summer camp, and then that camp was set on fire by a giant eyeball monster. That’s Don't Starve Together. It’s a multiplayer survival game where the main goal is to not die, which sounds easy until you realize everything wants you dead. The cute, gothic art style is a lie; this game is pure chaos. You start with nothing but a sore butt from falling out of the sky. Within minutes, you’ll be eaten by a spider, struck by lightning, or go insane just from looking at a flower for too long. The game throws seasons at you—Winter will freeze you, Summer will cook you, and Spring will just annoy you with endless frogs. The best part? Playing with friends. Nothing strengthens a bond like watching your buddy get mauled by a werepig while you run away screaming, "I'll avenge you!" The worst part? When that "friend" eats all the food, burns down your base, or resurrects you right in the middle of a boss fight. It’s frustrating, unfair, and absolutely hilarious. You’ll die a thousand deaths, but you’ll keep coming back for one more day. Just try not to starve.
i started on xbox, and put 800 hours into that- and here we are, 6 years later. the game itself has been out for much longer than that- started as a gamejam made in a week, evolved into the singleplayer Don't Starve, and now here, at Don't Starve Together. i like it. i also totally get why some people don't. in-game hints are becoming more common to help new players along, but the game is ambiguous on purpose in favor of puns and i think that's charming as it is frustrating. to learn this game, i joined communities and learned along side veteran players and all my time is put into dedicated private servers (have not played pubs). there are now skill trees, adding character build variety, as well as a terraria-style "hard mode" in the form of the Surface and Cave rifts (not as fond of those). downside is you must seek knowledge (usually externally) to know any of the strategies and stats, as the in-game scrapbook can't replace extensive wiki knowledge and player testing. there's a rhythm and cycle to this game that i enjoy a lot. once you learn how to survive the seasons, you may feel compelled to start fighting the entire world out of boldness. explore the entire world to learn what you can craft and do. want to learn to play fast, and complete all bosses within an in-game year? the developers have tweaked the game so you can do that! want to play slow? there's a mountain of options to turn up or off in the settings, so you can tailor the world to whatever experience you're looking for. there's incredible decorative potential in this game, as the skin system can reskin nearly every item that exists, earned through daily drops and weekly drops from playing. each season is between 2 and 2.5 hours long, allowing playing in reasonable bursts or binges hinging on your ability to plan what you'd like to do (the real hardest part). incredible sandbox. 8/10, requires a lot of patience to learn and play. best with friends!
