Target Audience: Puzzle Fans Summary: Evergate is sadly going to be a game that is going to be overlooked by a majority of people. It gives off the impression that it's similar to Ori and the Blind Forest from a visual standpoint, and it's a small indie platformer that may not have that extra oompf that forces you to look at it. Yet, if you actually dig into a game, you'll find a fresh take on the platforming puzzle genre that forces you to keep on thinking creatively, while still forcing you to have a semi-precision in order to execute your puzzle plan. Needless to say, there's not a lot wrong here on the surface, and my entire first two hours with the game was basically me having fun on stream while really appreciating the eye for game design. Dividing levels into three objectives that don't run concurrently all the time was smart, to force replayability but to allow for experimentation with the actual path that you're going to travel, and there's enough leeway in most of these elements in order to scoot by even when a plan falls apart at first attempts. I really enjoyed the subtle layers of teaching: forcing you to think about new obstacles in a different way, and not just use each tool like you had used before hand. The artifacts is a nice touch to help out the game too for those who may have difficulty, although I do believe at times it can be a little bit too forgiving with those aritfacts (ice one in particular). The presentation, while feeling similar, is definitely its own thing: and I was really surprised with the level of detail in the environments in particular. Storytelling is left to be there for people to enjoy if they want, and let's you fill in the holes with your own interpretation without feeling hopelessly lost. Honestly, I'm actually somewhat sad, because I know this game is going to get overlooked in the big picture, but it's a real enjoyable romp that you should take a look at. Gameplay Footage: https://youtu.be/x01z9yqehU8 Lists: Positives: list]
The hook of the game's puzzle platforming feels unique and forces you to think about new situations in a variety of ways, and doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out.
Level Design is fantastic with interesting tests of intelligence and fresh from level to level.
Pacing of each new mechanic stays around long enough by itself to test you without dragging itself out.
3 objective system encourages replayability without forcing it down your throat. Gives you ample opportunities to new paths and ways to get through a level.
Options menu will help really refine your experience for those who need that adjustment.
Presentation has a level of detail that's not seen in a lot of puzzle platformers and feels like it brings life to the world in question.
Music sets the mood really well and doesnt' feel like it's there for the sake of being there. Adds to the game.
Works well for both keyboard/mouse set up.
Negatives:

I'm actually somewhat struggling on this section. There's no KO punch to really knock you off your feet?
There are elements that could be highlighted better at times in terms of tutorials, but they are few and far between. A beautiful looking game with an art style reminiscent of Ori and a great soundtrack, but wildly different gameplay. Here you’ll find a precision trial and error puzzle platformer. The game is split into different worlds each made of a collection of levels. The main goal is to get to the end using the special jumping mechanic wherein you slow down time and jump off of some part of the level onto another. The game requires extreme precision. Most of the platforming will require a restart of the entire level if you fail one piece of it. This part deterred me from continuing. The levels don’t allow for much creativity as it’s clear there is one correct path and it must be done with extreme precision. The levels quickly become very complicated and tedious to complete. I would’ve preferred more dynamism in the level design.
It looks as if Ori and Dandara had a love child, but with its own unique twists. This is a wonderful puzzle platformer. It's tough, but incredibly satisfying when everything lines up correctly. I actually think it feels a lot like Celeste in its gameplay, in that it has very intuitive abilities, and you'll die again and again, but that makes victory feel all the sweeter. It's smooth, intuitive, and getting all the extra rewards for every level is utterly mindbending from the start. Don't listen to anyone saying it's an Ori clone. Those people have no idea what this game is, or possibly no idea what Ori is. Evergate is not a Metroidvania, it is a tough but satisfying puzzle platformer that's a ton of fun. It puzzles me that using a similar visual style leads to so much criticism. These games are beloved for their art styles as well as gameplay/story. If another dev adopts a similar style and makes a good game, what’s the problem? This is how anything artistic works: something that has a distinct style inspires other creators. It’s the same with game mechanics, and the piece they draw on is always only a tiny part of what makes or breaks the game. So if you feel on the fence about getting it because you're worried it's just a rip off, know that it isn't. Evergate is a fun little game with a lot of heart and its own identity. It's got 5-8 hours of content, and it is absolutely worth it. I really hope more people get to enjoy this gem of a game. 10/10
