Fear the Spotlight is a rare kind of horror game - genuinely creepy, surprisingly heartfelt, and far more memorable than expected. I went in not knowing quite what to expect and came out genuinely impressed. What immediately sets it apart from a lot of indie horror is how likeable the characters are - you actually care about them, which makes every tense moment hit that much harder. The stealth gameplay isn’t overly punishing, but it’s effective, keeping you on edge without becoming frustrating. Puzzles strike a great balance too - challenging enough to feel rewarding, but never so obscure that they stall the experience. What really elevates the game is its pacing and structure. It leans into classic survival horror elements without overdoing the backtracking, and the second chapter is where things really shine - darker, spookier, and more intense, while smartly avoiding repetitive retreads of earlier areas. There’s a strong sense of escalation without padding. The atmosphere throughout walks a unique line between wholesome and haunting, giving the game an identity that sticks with you. It’s not the most mechanically complex horror game out there, but it doesn’t need to be. Fear the Spotlight succeeds through tone, character, and smart design choices - and in a crowded indie horror space, that’s more than enough. I liked this a lot more than I expected, and it’s easily one of the more standout experiences in the genre lately.
Super fun little indie horror game! Nothing too crazy gameplay wise with mostly puzzles and running away from the big bad, but the story is excellent and it does a phenomenal job of making you feel like you're in the world of the game. And the characters, oh man. Very rarely in horror games have I connected with and liked the main characters so much. Viv and Amy are top notch characters with a lot of depth, and their dynamic together is great. In most games, I want to beat the bad guy cuz fighting bad guys is fun, but Fear the Spotlight, I wanted to beat the bad guy cuz I wanted Viv and Amy to be alright, which is a testament to how strong their characters are. I also enjoyed
getting to see the story from both characters' perspectives, a la Resident Evil 2 A&B scenarios.
Did make me kinda queasy when I started playing with all of the fuzz and ambient camera/pixel shake which is one of the first times I've ever gotten a bit motion sick gaming, but thankfully you can disable those settings and it was smooth sailing for me after that. It is a pretty short game; I beat it in just over 3 hours. Not saying that's a bad thing tho. It didn't overstay its welcome and it also wasn't cramming everything into 3 hours; it is the perfect length for the game imo. Just something to think about when considering buying at full price vs waiting for a sale. Highly recommend! Viv and Amy 4eva <3
A great return to the old style of horror games while being modern enough to feel good to play. I really appreciate the simple design of Fear the Spotlight. I thought that was a great strength of it. It tells its story well without tons of tedium. I'm hoping they plan on expanding on the lore/characters surrounding this game. It's an interesting premise.
