Final Fantasy VII is a Japanese role-playing game, a seventh installment in the series, excluding spin-offs. The main events take place in the world of Gaia, in the city of Midgar; the game combines standard fantasy elements with steampunk and other science fiction, providing the players with well-defined lore and locations. The main character, a mercenary named Cloud Strife, joins the cause of disrupting a megacorporation, which was destroying the planet with its excavations for energy. However, the storyline offers much more beyond that, allowing players to discover the secrets of Midgar, and eventually, save the world. Final Fantasy VII follows the trend set by previous games of the series, offering a grand world map to explore, with unique locations and lengthy battles. The combat system is a trademark for the genre and the series, where the player’s team and the enemies trade blow in a turn-based manner, employing different skills and items until either side is defeated. The game’s art style is innovative for a Final Fantasy, as it uses 3D models over 2D backgrounds, resulting in a unique and memorable art style.

Runs well on modern hardware.

One of the best games ever made. The very first game I've ever played for Playstation. ★★★★★ | A timeless masterpiece that still defines JRPGs If there were ever a game that deserved the word legendary, it’s Final Fantasy VII. From the moment you step into Midgar as Cloud Strife, the game pulls you into a world that feels both grand and deeply personal. What starts as a mission against a corrupt corporation quickly unfolds into an unforgettable story about identity, loss, and fighting for the planet’s future. The cast is one of the strongest in gaming history. Characters like Aerith Gainsborough and Tifa Lockhart aren’t just party members—they’re emotionally grounded, memorable individuals. And then there’s Sephiroth, a villain so iconic he still sets the bar decades later. Gameplay-wise, the Materia system is brilliantly flexible, letting you customize your party in ways that still feel modern. Whether you want to break the game with clever builds or just enjoy the ride, it gives you freedom without overwhelming you. The music by Nobuo Uematsu is nothing short of extraordinary. Tracks like “One-Winged Angel” and “Aerith’s Theme” aren’t just good—they’re unforgettable pieces of gaming history. Yes, the graphics show their age. Yes, some mechanics are a bit old-school. None of that matters. What does matter is how this game makes you feel—and few games, even today, come close. Final Fantasy VII isn’t just a great game—it’s a cornerstone of the medium. If you haven’t played it yet, you’re not just missing a classic—you’re missing a piece of gaming history. ________________________________________________________________________ There two things that are very frustrating for me is the steam deck controls. There two many keys controls and its very difficult to figure out the right combos to get Tifa's Final Limit Break but I figured it out by writing it down and adjusting it to the steam deck buttons. The other thing is the achievement for Materia Overload. You Must have all the materias in your inventory at least one of each mastered including enemy skills materia. One Major thing to look out for is when you get the underwater materia, do not overfarm materias in the Northern Crater. There is a system in Final Fantasy VII where there is a limit of how many materias you can carry in your inventory. Everytime you master a materia, a new one is created. If you max your materias, the Underwater Materia will be destroyed as the first materia because it has a one use purpose for the Emerald Weapon. I didn't know about this until I doublechecked my inventory and found it missing. I had to reload a save that was 15-20 hours before my current save. I have to do another 15-20 hours of materia maxing to get this achievement. You can only get the Underwater Materia Once from the Kalm Traveler, don't use it or destroy it before you finish this achievement unless you don't care at all. Hope it helps if someone ever reads this.
This was one of my very first childhood games I played on the PSX, and to this day I stand by saying that this game is truly amazing, even in 2026! 10/10
Wow. What an absolutely amazing game. Final Fantasy 7’s story and characters can’t be beaten by any other game. The way this game is written is brilliant. My dad bought this game for me in about July last year because it was his favourite childhood game, and said if I beat it he would buy me the new remakes. And I played this game for about 40 minutes, with no knowledge of it beforehand, before giving up before I even finished the first mission. The outdated graphics and the amount of enemy encounters were too much for me. Until about the start of April this year. I finally got a Steam Deck and was looking through my game library in the car and saw FF7. I thought I must’ve really disappointed my dad, so I decided to play it again and send him a picture of it. I thought I’d only play it for a bit before getting bored of it this time. But this time was different. Since the last time I played it in July, I had learned to appreciate games for what they are, despite graphics. I played games like Deltarune and Undertale, which are arguably worse graphics than FF7, so this time the game was bearable. I pushed through more of the game and then I realised just why my dad loves this game so much. The characters just stick with you, and the story and gameplay feel so ahead of its time. The game is just so addictive! At parts I really wanted to quit, and play the remakes, especially during the Carry Armor and final fight. But I’m so glad I pushed through it, and I’m glad to say after 50 hours I have beaten this game. Final Fantasy VII is the best game of all time.
