Final Fantasy VIII is the eighth main installment in the Final Fantasy series. The gameplay makes a departure from many series standards. While it still uses the Active Time Battle system, it deviates from the series' traditional means of boosting a character's power via leveling, although levels are not completely abandoned as they were in Final Fantasy II. In addition, it does not have a Magic Point-based system for spell-casting. Instead, magic is collected, drawn, and created from items, and is used to power up the characters via the junction system.

Runs well on modern hardware.

Final Fantasy VIII is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated games in the entire series and easily my favorite Final Fantasy I’ve played so far. The story really stands out with its focus on Squall and the emotional journey he goes through. It has a more personal tone compared to other entries, and while it can be a bit confusing at times, it has a lot of memorable moments and strong character development. The gameplay is unique with the Junction system, which lets you customize your characters in a very different way compared to other RPGs. It takes some time to understand, but once it clicks, it offers a lot of depth and flexibility. The game also has a really strong atmosphere, from the soundtrack to the world design. It creates a feeling that sticks with you and helps make the experience more memorable overall. Overall, Final Fantasy VIII is an underrated masterpiece in my eyes. It may not be for everyone because of its systems, but it delivers a unique and emotional RPG experience that I personally really enjoyed. Gameplay: 8/10 Very Good | Overall: 9/10 Great
fantastic game, unfortunately this feels like a terrible way to play it. between the cheap launcher, wacky controller support and bad soundtrack quality, it's a bit of a struggle to recommend. i mean yeah you can mod all of those but i'm not reviewing mods here, i'm reviewing what is being sold directly on Steam. i guess a thumbs up if you want to play FF8 but don't mind dealing with inevitable modding and jank to get the game to play and sound right?
I genuinely recommend this over the "Remaster". Add the "Roses and Wine" mod to fix the music, add the mod that fixes the Quetzacotl sound, and you're good to go.
