John Wick resigns his job in the US Military, his commanding officer doesn't take this decision well, and then John spends the entire game fertilizing the forest with the soldiers sent after him. This is an FPS about speedrunning through small (~60 second) levels to get the lowest completion time. The story campaign consists of more open areas that you'll have plot an optimal path through, and the challenge levels tend more towards prescriptive linear gauntlets. You'll get the most out of this game is you enjoy chasing ranks in challenge modes with all the repetition it implies, without it this is just a very short shooter.
Many times I have walked away from games having enjoyed my time with them. Many of them will fade from my mind eventually, destined to rot in my library. This is not one of these games. In only 14 hours I AM YOUR BEAST has given me one of my favorite gaming experiences this year. During much of my time spent with it, I thought to myself that it must have been made for me, because there is no way a game this good just, exists. The gameplay loop of running through sections of enemies while figuring out how to efficiently kill them in order to shave time off along with planning a route that saves the most time was nothing short of incredible. Every single time I beat a level there was always a thought that, "I could've been faster" or "Oh there's a route that's way quicker than what I've been doing. The fact that whenever you picked up a weapon or were killing in a specific way the COI agents would say something over the radio added a great touch to repeat attempts. The gunplay felt incredible, headshots felt amazing when they connected and body shots felt terrible, as they should. The mechanic of throwing your guns at enemies after they empty out leading to strategies where I would intentionally use up ammo at some sections in order to throw and then kick an enemy is something I have only seen in Hotline Miami. I don't want to make a comparison as these are two wildly different games serving two different purposes, yet it is clear to me there is a shared DNA in them. To me, that is incredible. I also fell in love with the missions where you kill waves of enemies and go for a high score. It was in those levels where I felt the combat and style of the game really began to shine. There was a single moment I had when, after throwing a bear trap at an enemy across the field, I picked up a gun below me and aimed it at a wasps nest above 4 or so enemies, it was the highlight of my day. That moment alone was great in a game that creates moments like this at every single moment. In terms of story I really love Harding's characterization and moreover the concept as a whole of, "I've got one last job for you." "No." "Alright I'm just gonna kill you." Awesome. The soundtrack was also incredible and the way that the gameplay seamlessly interacts with the music to where it almost feels like you and it are "in sync" was amazing. All in all. a fantastic game where very moment headshots, bear traps and explosive kicks was better than the last. 10/10
I didn't expect anything from this game and yet... here I am writing a review. Everything about this game screams: "Developers invested Pure Love. We made a gem and want to share it". Gameplay is nice, especially for an adrenaline junkies (meant as a compliment). Music is even better, ever chapter of the story felt so empowering as you destroy enemies, sent by the COI. I would recommend this game to everyone, who's bored from long and boring story shooters. This game isn't about one specific thing, and it makes it a great game. Pink Mitten and The Beast bromance is a cherry on top. RIght, babe?
