A PvP-focused extraction shooter set on the mysterious planet of Tau Ceti IV, Marathon will see players inhabit the bodies of Runners, cybernetic mercenaries who have been designed to survive the planet’s harsh environments and explore the lost colony that once inhabited Tau Ceti’s surface. Players will engage solo or in crews of three, searching for mysterious alien artifacts, as well as for valuable loot and new weapons and gear that they can add to their collection.

Runs well on modern hardware.

Bungie is ignoring a player base over a SINGLE TOGGLE SWITCH ON BATTLEYE. Battleye is fully supported on proton/linux but they refuse to enable it. If this is supposed to be Bungie's big comeback locking out an entire Linux desktop and Steam deck community is a massive error here. You're leaving money and a player count on the table for zero technical reason. This is a policy issue not a platform port issue. And yes I waited in the main menu to even post this ridiculous review of unsupported OS in 2026. I did watch my friend play it the game looks really fun.
After one full season of 3 months, here is a short review of Marathon. Short premise that i have about 2000 hours in Hunt Showdown, 300 hours in Arc Raiders and i have also played Tarkov, The Cycle and some other less noteworthy games in this exact genre to compare Marathon to. The worldbuilding, gunplay, atmosphere and sounddesign are exceptionally good. Nothing compares to naything i have ever played in terms of extracitonshooters. A lot of Games aim for super realistic settings and a scenario that could actually be true in a parallel timeline or universe. Marathon aims for something unique and expresses it with shapes and forms, colors and sounds, feel and impact. This exactly is what makes Marathon stand out of the rest of its genre-colleagues: It is a Game that actually feels and looks like a game, which is a nice change and something people may have not felt in a very long time. The Systems in Season 1 were a good foundation but needed some work in terms of progressionpacing explanation and balancing, which they will iron out in season 2. Doing contracts, interacting with the world and its system was fun and fresh, even though the onboarding and explanaiton was a little bit rough at first but once it clicks, you wil have no problem navigating, understanding and using the systems given to you. Its also important to me to mention that Marathon is very generous with loot, rewards and everything else that you need to stay afloat in the game. Marathons surface seems too hardcore for people watchign the game but when you get into it and stay focussed on progress and actually doing objectives, you will not only have a lot of fun stuff to do but you will also ramp up gear, experience and knowledge while having a challenge that is still fun. The Runnershells are unique in their appearance, playstyle and abilities, which makes the current roster open for every playstyle you can possibly want. It does not matter if you want to play aggressive, supportive, defensive or anything in between, Marathons Roster has you covered. Marathon also is one of the few Extractionshooters that have an actual real endgame with cryo archive and the compiler boss. Generally speaking, every map in this game has its own events and mechanics which makes every environment feel special, alive and interactive. In about 350 hours of playing Marathon i was able to get every contract done, kill the Compiler and found new Friends to play with on a regular base through crew-filling or third party platforms like Discord. This game is for you when you want a challenge that still softens up your fall if you fail. PvP is still the main focus of the game at the moment but they will add more pve-centered and pvp-light modes in the future as already announced by the Developers. Dont listen to the hate online about this game, give it an honest try and experience the game for yourself, you may fall in love with Marathon just as much as i did. See you on tau Ceti IV, Runners!
Game is pretty fun, however I BEG that Bungie enables Linux support for BattlEye <3
