It's like if Doom Eternal was a rhythm game. If that does not convince you, then I'm afraid nothing will
I've only played through the first level, and I can already tell this is gonna be one of my favorite games of all time, the gameplay is addictive, the music is amazing, and the combo system linking to the vocals of the track make you want to try to get that sweet 16x just to hear them sing their hearts out like they had bills to pay, overall 9/10 game for any metal head who never liked rhythm games cause they didn't appeal to your tastes, like me.
On paper, Metal: Hellsinger sounds like a dream combo, like Hi-Fi Rush meets DOOM. But in reality, itโs just a frustrating, repetitive slog that proves blending two great genres doesn't automatically make a good game. Honestly, the best thing I can say about it is that itโs really short. That is a massive plus here, because it is just not a very enjoyable experience.
The Style and Sound Hold Up
To give credit where itโs due, the game has a very nice art style, and the writing (which is mostly narration) is pretty good. The voice acting is actually really solid and carries the story well. The music is decent too, but letโs be real, itโs not even close to being on par with DOOM.
Rhythm Combat That Fails to Hit the Beat
The actual gameplay is where everything falls apart. For a rhythm shooter, it is incredibly hard to stay on rhythm. And if you take away the gimmick of matching the beat, the combat just feels like a cheaper, clunkier knockoff version of DOOM Eternal.
Repetitive Enemies and Lazy Bosses
It also gets boring fast. There is barely any enemy variety, and the boss fights are incredibly lazy. Every single boss is the exact same model, just reskinned with slightly different abilities. The only exception is the final boss, which swaps out the boredom for pure frustration because the fight is just incredibly cheesy.
Frustrating Performance and Technical Glitches
Compounding all of this is the fact that the game is barely optimized. The performance is rough, and the technical polish is practically non-existent. Half the time, textures don't even load in, leaving you trying to fight on literal invisible ground.
The Verdict: Stick to the Classics
Ultimately, Metal: Hellsinger just isn't fun. Save your time and stick to the games itโs trying to copy.
