Fantastic game, but I can't recommend this port. Lots of lag and slowdown, especially in multiplayer during heavier scenes. It makes certain parts of the game that are normally really intense instead really chuggy and slow. Makes for a lesser experience when you're showing it to a friend who's playing for the first time.
Metal Slug 3 is the most ambitious and over-the-top entry in the classic run-and-gun series. It delivers bigger levels, wild new mechanics (underwater stages, giant robots, zombie transformations, and even a branching path system), and some of the most insane boss battles the franchise has ever produced. The hand-drawn animation remains gorgeous, the action is frantic and satisfying, and the two-player local co-op is still a blast. However, the game suffers from noticeable difficulty spikes, some overly long and repetitive sections, and a few cheap deaths that can frustrate even veteran players. The increased length and ambition sometimes come at the cost of the tight pacing that made the earlier games so addictive.
Metal Slug 3 (the very best MS in the entire series, in my humble opinion) is a very solid port on Steam. The game runs well and has a bevy of extra options for customization on different setups. First and foremost, the game has online multiplayer. This is noteworthy because the game dynamic completely changes when two friends are playing together versus going at it solo. When playing co-op, the pace is much faster because you always have someone watching your back! Other nice additions include a ridiculous number of display resolutions, scanlines, and display filters, a nice image gallery, the option to play with unlimited credits, Steam achievements, controller and keyboard button mapping, and the ability to replay any stage you have already visited right from the beginning. A really nice package all around. Graphically, I believe this to be the pinnacle of pixel art graphics, animation, and design. Not only is this Nazca's best looking game, it is also their most creative and atmospheric. Soldiers, zombies, aliens, aircraft, boats, submarines, trains, cars, and tanks... you name it, it's all here to control or blow up. Indeed, the graphics are a hallmark of SNK's distinct style... a style that captivates viewers and pulls them in with action-packed whimsy and incredible detail. Lastly, the music and sound design is right on par with the rest of the presentation. Each track has a catchy, militaristic tone and the voice overs are some of the best and most meme-worthy in the business. "ROKKIT LAWNCHAIR!" If you have the option to play this on an actual MVS or AES, that is the best way to go. However, if you don't, then this Steam port is an amazing second choice. I recommend it not just for hardcore run-n-gun arcade fans, but to the gamer who appreciates the sheer amount of detail and love found in every aspect of Metal Slug 3.
