I have very mixed feelings about this port. While it is great to finally have a decent port available to pc, I think the PSX version is way better than this one. The PSX version had better art for the mission select screen, had the military bootcamp with extra missions and it included concept art for the game (with the soundtrack). I can't believe a 2001 port is better than one made 13 years later. Hell, playing a bootleg version with an arcade emulator gives you a better experience (no autofire but the audio is better.). If you love the series, sure you can buy this to have as a nice bit in your collection; if not, dust off your old PSX, PS2 or PS3 (or an emulator if you know where to find one) and enjoy something made with more effort.
Immortal classic. Very grateful for having this pieces of history for less than a coffee with this crazy discounts
This one is definitely better. It's still not a particularly great port, but there is isn't horrible input lag like the first game's port on here. You can play the game as intended, and I felt I did quite well. The Controller works here without much issue. The pitch issues with the sound also are much less of a problem. The music will still occasionally hitch or distort, but it's less pronounced. Still noticeable though. There is also noticeable slowdown in 3 of the late game areas, which I'm certain did not happen in the original arcade version. Ironic, considering X was the version released to fix the slowdown 2 had, but this port reintroduces the slowdown. As a mega fan of the metal slug games, I was able to see past the bad parts of this port and have a blast revisiting my childhood. If you don't have the better way to play the game, this version is worth picking up on a half off sale.
