Portal is one of those rare games that feels completely fresh from the moment you start playing. Instead of relying on traditional combat, it challenges you with clever puzzles built around a brilliantly simple mechanic: creating portals to navigate space in ways that initially seem impossible. Each level builds on the last, introducing new ideas at just the right pace so you never feel overwhelmed, yet always engaged. What really sets Portal apart is its personality. The dry, dark humor—especially from the iconic AI antagonist—adds a layer of charm that keeps the experience memorable long after you finish. The writing is sharp, subtle, and often laugh-out-loud funny, making even quiet moments feel meaningful. The game’s minimalist design works in its favor. Clean visuals and a focused environment ensure nothing distracts you from the puzzles themselves, while the physics-based gameplay feels incredibly satisfying once you master it. Every solution feels earned, giving you a genuine sense of accomplishment. Despite its relatively short length, Portal leaves a lasting impression. It’s a perfect example of how creativity, smart design, and strong writing can come together to create something truly special. Whether you’re a longtime gamer or completely new to the medium, it’s an experience that’s absolutely worth your time.
★★★★★ Valves 2007 puzzle masterpiece was such a sick experience, as someone who hasn't really played portal 2, nor portal 1 at all i came into this completely blind without much forward thinking. At first i was genuinely stumped at how half of this game worked but as i went along the more i understood the in's and outs of the physics and thinking required to actually succeed in the Aperture Science Laboratories. I can absolutely understand why this is the fifth highest rated steam game oat as its just such a fun unique AND innovative contribution to the puzzle genres. Coming from this experience im very very excited for portal 2 as that game seems like it builds upon the first game and makes it 100x better. The 100% while short was pretty difficult for me as the advanced levels kicked my ass. Base game levels took like an hour and the other 5-6 hours was spent on doing my second playthrough along with the advanced levels. The challenge levels were my biggest issue as im useless at everything speedrunning related so i had to cop out with that and cheese it. HOWEVER the rest is honestly to a normal player pretty achievable and you can have quite a lot of fun whilst doing it. Achievements like Terminal Velocity and Friendly fire are just goofy and fun and something that you would do out of pure curiousity and experimenting. HOWEVER the radio achievement was less than delightful to do and i was not that much of a fan of it. All in all i feel like whatever i say has already been said about portal, i came into this game kinda not liking it and the more i played the more i loved and cherished the really enjoyed the physics and quirks of the old valve games. Its charming and fun and affordable normally and on sale its an absolute bargain. Hope to have more fun with this as time goes on
A really short game; albeit an AMAZING one. I've always wanted to play Portal since I was a kid but I didn't have the means to get it, and now that I did, I am so, so glad to have experienced such an amazing game as this. You'd initially think that this game is nothing but a portal puzzle game where you just solve levels and that's it. Once you get through the halfway point however, the whole game's vibe straight up changes, and that shift is what hooked me in. Ending was absolutely amazing despite the game being somewhat dated. 10/10, MUST PLAY
