Really impressive experience, I especially loved the visuals, audio design, and the creature. The atmosphere feels dark and immersive, the audio design does an excellent job of making the world feel alive and unsettling. The creature is easily one of my favorite part of the game. Its design is creepy and memorable, and the way its sounds and breaths makes every encounter feel tense and unpredictable. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience.
In a year full of big releases, I can guarantee that Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is going to go down as one of THE underrated titles of the year. My recommendation: pick it up now, pick it up when it's on sale, pick it up whenever. It's definitely worth checking out. The chapters can be played all at once, or maybe 1 or 2 chapters per session, there's enough difficulty customization and not too many gameplay mechanics for you to be lost after not playing for a while. It's also not too long, for players who aren't feeling up to committing to another 60-100 hour title. I got all achievements in around 30 hours, though it can be less if you're not interested in all achievements and/or a lot better in exploration than I am. I've never played a Plague Tale game before, but I was interested after hearing that this is a more action-oriented sequel (I don't really like stealth). And since the game didn't cost me 60-70 euros, I figured I might as well try after seeing some good reviews. I love how the first half of the game really scratches that Uncharted itch for me when it comes to the puzzles, the setting and the banter with your companion. The characters are well written, well performed and Asobo really got the environments right. The puzzles weren't too difficult, and I like how the game offers you an option to get hints frequently, but even then it's still a choice whether or not you accept the hint. It's not an automatically spoken hint like in the God of War games, and it starts off pretty vague, like a reminder of what you're supposed to do, and can end up with it literally being spelled out for you. But if you don't press the button to receive the hint, you can still take all the time you need to figure it out on your own. The second half of the game had more stealth and tense sequences and really reminded me that I am playing a Plague Tale game, but by that time I was already invested in the characters enough to want to finish the game. I have to give the devs props for how they designed the last few chapters. The pressure of not being seen/grabbed, along with Sophia's labored breathing and the tense music really made me feel anxious in real life. Performance was well enough for me. I was playing on the highest settings on Fullscreen mode and getting around 60 FPS. Not quite stable, but no significant frame drops most of the time. I do find it peculiar that the game suffered a lot of crashes when I did a fast clean up run. What I mean by that is if I ran through a chapter too fast and switched windows occasionally, it would often crash to a black screen. I'm talking several times an hour. With some force I'd be able to get to my OS again, and I'd note that Steam had closed, AMD gave a bug report, and I could hear the audio of the game still going. The only solution I'd have was to force close using task manager. Turning off FSR helped only a little bit. When I capped my FPS to 60 it seemed to stop, but I'd have to take some screen tearing for granted then. BUT! Like I said: this only happened when I was rushing. In my normal playthrough, with regular exploration, I experienced zero crashes. All in all, I enjoyed my time in Resonance, even though the 2nd half made me sadder than I usually like to be. But maybe that's not really fair for me to say about a game with the word "Plague" in its title. Sophia is a good main character, and her story definitely made me interested in checking out the other Plague Tale titles. And I'd like to hereby formally request a prequel to the prequel so I can find out more about Leni.
