I didn't grow up playing video games, and as a result I am usually terrible at them. I can't keep up with combat games and I'm not always clever enough for all of the puzzles and secrets. I've enjoyed things like Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, Spiritfarer, and a long time ago I played Harvest Moon and SSX3. More recently, I got into playing Minecraft, but only on Peaceful mode. Based on the games I've enjoyed, I asked ChatGPT for a game I could try and get into, and Roots of Pacha was the overwhelming recommendation. I am so grateful! This game is so sweet, so thoughtfully crafted, and it has such immense breadth. I have a hard time pulling myself away from it when I'm playing. I like that you can take it at your own pace, there's still some challenge to figuring certain things out, and there is some degree of difficulty depending on your approach. I also like that it's not impossible to set it aside for a period of time, and pick back up right where you left off. I'm 85 hours in and I can tell there is still so much more I can do.
I appreciate that they tried something different here, and I did enjoy the game to the extent that I kept playing until I had completed all the totems. I enjoyed growing crops, cooking, decorating the house, and taming various animals with the music mini game was fun. The main thing that stops me from giving it a thumbs up is that ultimately the story and, more importantly, the npcs were just not very interesting to me. I more or less stopped bothering with the social aspect towards the end.
This was such a fun, charming game. I grew up playing (and absolutely loving) Harvest Moon, so I'm always interested to find new and interesting twists on the genre. Of course, with the recent explosion of the cozy farming sim, I have become much pickier about which games I'm willing to invest the time into--but I'm happy to say that ROOTS OF PACHA passes the test. I loved discovering new crops and "ideas" to improve the farming aspects of the game, and really enjoyed the exploration of the rival tribes and the ability to get to know each group more with recent updates. This dev is definitely on my radar for whatever they make next!
