Sam & Max Hit the Road is a graphic adventure video game released by LucasArts during the company's adventure games era. The game was originally released for MS-DOS in 1993 and for Mac OS in 1995. A 2002 re-release included compatibility with Windows. The game is based on the comic characters of Sam and Max, the "Freelance Police", an anthropomorphic dog and "hyperkinetic rabbity thing". The characters, created by Steve Purcell, originally debuted in a 1987 comic book series. Based on the 1989 Sam & Max comic On the Road, the duo take the case of a missing bigfoot from a nearby carnival, traveling to many American culture tourist sites to solve the mystery.

Runs well on modern hardware.

You will hit the road. You will not like it at first, believe me. You will realize that you suck at point-n'-click games. You will form a maternal affection for Max. You will look up a guide, use it for one puzzle, and then close it, believing that you won't need it again. In two minutes, you will be opening your browser again for that exact same guide. You will begin to watch your pride drift away, and every achievement you have ever gotten in a video game will turn out to have meant nothing to this test of strength. You will, at first, not understand the functions of each of the function tools. You will use Look on everything. You will not know how to save your game, and, once you have made considerable progress, you will close the window and it'll alllll go away. All of it. You will proclaim in your agony, "Oh, why didn't I buy this game while it was on sale?" You will consider refunding it. But then you will realize that, of course, you spent too long playing it. And ya bought it two months ago.
Sam & Max Hit the Road is peak 90s LucasArts: sharp writing, unhinged humor, and two freelance police officers who solve crimes with the grace of a car crash. Built on the SCUMM engine and one of LucasArts’ first fully voice‑acted adventures, it still feels alive thanks to the iMUSE music system and Bill Farmer’s iconic performance as Sam. Highlights: - Comedy that hits harder than it has any right to. - Voice acting that defined the duo for decades. - A cross‑country tour of America’s weirdest attractions. - Puzzles that bounce between clever and cartoon‑logic chaos. Cons: - A couple puzzles and minigames show their age. - The humor is aggressively 90s — which you’ll either love or fear. 10/10. A hilarious, stylish, technically impressive classic that still earns its cult status.
Charming but confusing (you might need a guide!) 7/10 A classic point and click adventure.
