Slay the Spire is a deckbuilding game with roguelike elements. You go up a tower, fight monsters, and build your card deck along the way. When you die, you start over from scratch. The deckbuilding is simple enough for beginners, but it has real depth. You can create powerful combos once you figure out which cards work well together. Different classes also change everything. Each one plays completely differently, so every run feels fresh. The art style is simple and clean, almost like a hand drawn comic. It is not flashy, but that makes sense since the game also works well on mobile. Because it is a roguelike, every run is different. The map, the cards, and the enemies change each time, so it never gets boring. It is hard, but fair, and it always makes you want to try just one more time. TLDR; Slay the Spire is smart, addictive, and worth to play. A true classic for anyone, whether you are new to card games or not.
Pros:
- Very approachable for newcomers – easy to understand the basics - High replayability - Highly addictive (imagine the strongest drug you know and multiply it by 2) - Works great on both PC and mobile - Fair difficulty - Wide variety of enemies
Cons:
- Some cards and relics are almost useless, which creates an illusion of choice - Early parts of each run can feel boring and repetitive - RNG factor
Overall rating: 9/10
As someone, who's not a big fan of card games, this one was surprisingly enjoyable. The 4 characters provide different playstyles for everyone(Ironclad ftw!), each with various build options, most of which feel satisying, especially once you unlock all cards. Replayability is also great due to the roguelike elements and thankfully the RNG is not as bad as in other card games.
One of the most absolutely perfect games I have ever played, lots of variety and strategies to come up with.
