Spelunky is a 2008 platform video game created by independent developer Derek Yu and released as source-available freeware for Microsoft Windows. It was remade for the Xbox 360 in 2012, with ports of the new version following for various platforms, including back to Microsoft Windows. The player controls a spelunker who explores a series of caves while collecting treasure, saving damsels, fighting enemies, and dodging traps. The caves are procedurally generated, making each run-through of the game unique.

Runs well on modern hardware.

This game is a blast, especially multiplayer. Don't let the cute graphics fool you... this game can get pretty crazy. If a friend dies, you can find their coffin and resurrect them. There are a lot of hidden items, areas and secrets scattered throughout the worlds. You can even sacrifice someone on an altar and receive either a cool item, or trigger a trap. Take too long to get to the exit and you'll be hunted down by a big creepy ghost. You can buy items in a shop, or if you are quick, steal an item. Just be careful because the shop keeper goes insane and will shoot his shotgun all over the place and hunt you down like a madman. The levels are randomly generated and make the game very re-playable. This is a game I've been playing since my Xbox 360, and decided to get it for my PC years later. It's a true classic an d definitely worth buying.
What I love most about Spelunky HD is the speed of how you can just keep moving and moving. Go go go! It means once you get good at the game, you begin to make your own little methods on how to deal with each of the hazards quickly. THEN, that's when you get to try and grab as many treasure and collectibles as you can. You begin to notice which items you like more than others and the best way to take out each enemy. And thanks to the journal, it encourages curiosity to look for things you haven't seen before. The secret areas in this game are neat, they have exclusive enemies and items you can't get anywhere else, an actual good reward. This game also feels fair. As in the vast majority of the time, if you die, you can pinpoint what your mistake was clearly and use the information for next time. That being said, I feel the difficulty in Spelunky HD is too front-loaded. The first area or two always feel the hardest to me due to the lack of equipment. There's also an important item you need to save for in order to get the true ending of the game, which makes it feel almost up to luck if you have enough money for bombs in the earlier levels. Because of this friction, I sometimes feel it's better for my time to just restart a run if I don't get as many treasure spawns in the early rooms. And that sucks! It's out of my control. I hope that was fixed in the sequel, I haven't played that one much. Even with its flaws, Spelunky HD is a wonderful roguelike that feels like its fun scales with how you like to play it. I have fun both when doing slow, methodical runs, or blasting through as fast as I can. It's great!
an amazing game if you like rougelikes, most deaths feel like your fault, and you're gonna die a lot in this game
