This War of Mine is a 2014 war survival video game developed and published by Polish developer 11 Bit Studios. The game, inspired by the siege of Sarajevo among other conflicts, differs from most war-themed video games by focusing on the civilian experience of war rather than frontline combat. Characters have to make many difficult decisions in order to survive everyday dangers. There are various endings for each character, depending on the decisions made in the game. The game has received multiple DLCs and sold over 9 million units worldwide across multiple platforms.

Runs well on modern hardware.

An absolute emotional blender that forces you to make gut-wrenching survival choices while civilian life crumbles around you. Scavenging for canned food at night while dodging snipers makes every single victory feel depressingly hollow. Itโs a brilliant, heavy-hitting masterpiece that I can only bring myself to play when I want to feel thoroughly devastated.
This War of Mine presents the survival strategy genre from an unusual perspective for a war-themed game. You are forced to play as a group of ordinary civilians trying to survive a siege. Itโs an intense, emotionally heavy experience that focuses on the human cost of war and suffering.
Pros
Atmosphere The setting in a war-torn city is realistic and done really well. Just looking at your dark refuge is depressing yet serene and somewhat relaxing, knowing it's the only place where you're relatively safe. The music really adds to it, and the soundtrack in this game is top-notch. Realism and hard choices You are faced with tough choices almost every nightโwhether you survive or not, to kill or be killed. Morality is constantly tested, making you wonder what you would do if this happened in real life. You share in the characters' feelings and experience their hardships and moments of joy alongside them. Wide range of scenarios There is a diverse roster of characters, each with their own traits and abilities, which offers a multitude of ways to play. Everyone is unique and caters to different playstyles. Challenge Surviving in this game is notoriously hard. Every resource must be carefully rationed and strategically used. In extreme situations, survival is almost impossible. To top it off, there is no going back once your character dies.
Cons
Weak AI AI behavior during face-offs is sometimes disappointing; enemies will just mindlessly run towards you while being shot. Civilians also act terrified even if you return to a location as a different character. lLate daytime event Though it can be fixed with a mod, you often have to spend a lot of time just waiting around for events to trigger or traders to come knocking on your door. Repetitiveness Despite the variety of characters and scenarios, after just 1โ2 playthroughs things become quite predictable and simple, as you get used to every location fairly quickly.
Verdict
The game is a prime example of a survival strategy game: brutal, diverse, and straightforward. The atmosphere is excellent and immersive, and the characters feel unique and lively. While it does suffer from a few technical downsides, the emotional impact makes up for its flaws. This War of Mine stands out as a monument in the genre a dark, unforgettable masterpiece that everyone should experience at least once.
Honestly, narratively and in terms of immersion, there is a reason this game was an actual part of certain Polish school curriculums. While the game and game devs now are an adamant supporter of Ukraine, the game itself has a very sympathetic view of individuals in a conflict that emulates much more the perspective of Russian speaking denizens of the Donbass rebel controlled areas. Said areas now, annexed by Russia and are fundamental to the thesis of the entire war narrative for the Russian side. Ultimately, the game has a lot of nuance and it realistically portrays the desperation of citizens and soldiers left in dire straits of modern, urban conflicts. A game that is more relevant now than when it actually came out. Admittingly, I think after about 10 hours and several successful runs, you have seen all the game has to offer and its shock value and mechanics are as a result, far more visible. But the game does offer more story-driven narratives to really tug at the heart strings. Ultimately, a niche, somewhat performative, but very effective survival sim with competent design, great set up and a challenging, unrewarding experience that perfectly embodies the thesis of the game itself.
