Wolfenstein 3D is a first-person shooter presented with rudimentary 3D graphics and a follow-up to the top-down infiltration game Castle Wolfenstein. The game is broken up into levels, each of which is a flat plane divided into areas and rooms by a grid-based pattern of walls and doors, all of equal height. Each level is themed after Nazi bunkers and buildings. To finish a level, the player must traverse through the area to reach an elevator. Levels are grouped together into named episodes, with the final level focusing on a boss fight with a particularly difficult enemy. While traversing the levels, the player must fight Nazi guards and soldiers, dogs, and other enemies while managing supplies of ammunition and health. While later releases of the game included the Nocturnal Missions expansion, this initial release did not.

Runs well on modern hardware.

Wolfenstein 3D . This is my all-time favorite shooter! Its minimalism allowed me to enjoy the game for over 20 hours. The gameplay is incredibly addictive. You wander through a maze, looking for the keys to the doors and shoot pixelated Nazis with a variety of weapons. Remembering where you've been and where you haven't without a map is great challenge. The music and visual style are very unique and memorable. You have one set of cartridges for all weapons. Also! It's incredibly satisfying to discover secret treasure rooms and defeat epic bosses, including HITLER!! . Controls: WASD - move L Shift - run Space - open door Ctrl - fire Alt - strafe 1 - knife 2 - pistol 3 - Submachine Gun 4 - Chaingun Y - yes N - no
Memories!!! As for anyone complaining about not being able to change control setup. This was how the game shipped, this is how we played the game back in the 90s. Back then we played games the way they shipped and liked them anyway. If you do not like it, don’t buy old games and complain. I am just glad the game runs so well on DOSBox with full screen support on my 2k screen!
I never played the original but the problems with this port that everyone are saying are a bit true but it’s not super bad it’s DOS I kind of expect it though to be fair, button remapping especially WASD and the mouse work just fine there just isn’t as many options as most would like if that makes sense oh and controllers don’t work that well I tried 3, just stick to mouse and keyboard. Took a little time getting used to but not bad. Although very apparent of how rough this game is compared to doom, doom was a huge step up from this, graphics are fine but sometimes enemies blend into the background if far away enough, strafing is a little awkward cause unlike other fps games it’s not something that just comes with standard movement you gotta press alt or press mouse 2, on top of that the mouse also controls your movement altogether which can sometimes make mouse aiming a little awkward. As for maps they can be a little maze which I suppose is the point but not bad I only got stuck on one I’ve played both chapters so far, but usually they’re very short and straightforward. Enemies are kind of a$$ the design is charming of course but having played through all of doom 1/2/3 I can safely say these enemies are way more bullsh** they like to sneak attack you and sometimes aiming around a corner can be awkward because of how this game handles its perspective, I always play on this games version of ultra-violence which if you do it can sometimes mean that of course in moments like that your health can go from like 100 to 40 in a second. Not the hardest I’ve played or attempted but not cool sometimes. As for the game itself I’m gonna play all of it and looked online there’s about 6 chapters with like 10 levels each plus the spear of destiny dlc that comes with this, which is a good 20+ levels. That said you’ll get some good gameplay time out of this and even more if you find it charming enough to come back to. Overall worth picking up about a 6.5/10 a bit rougher than everything that came after but considering this is basically the granddaddy of doom and very early on I’d say it’s worth at least a try.
