XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a 2012 turn-based tactics video game developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K. It is a "reimagining" of the 1994 strategy game UFO: Enemy Unknown. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is set during an alien invasion of Earth in an alternative version of 2015; the player controls an elite, multinational, paramilitary organization called XCOM and commands troops in a series of turn-based tactical missions. Between missions, the player directs the research and development of technologies from recovered alien technology and captured prisoners, expands XCOM's base of operations, manages finances, and monitors and responds to alien activity.

Runs well on modern hardware.

I love personality of this game. It's clearly a love-letter to all things sci-fi (sectoids = grey aliens, thin men = lizard people.....), which is very appealing. Above all else, the gameplay is also uniquely fun, quite alike to Civilization (wonder why!). Despite some possible refinements (not a big fan of the auto-scrolling text personally), it's a must-play, highly recommended even for those who don't play strategy games.
This game still holds up, after all these years. Even if your get it only after having played XCOM 2 first, it makes for a great "prequel". Just be sure to start the Enemy Within version when the game asks you to. Most people will be fine playing this expanded version without ever having to start the base game. There is also no achievement locked to the base game. Enjoy!
one of the greatest games of all time and it still holds up that way. if you like tactical combat that rewards careful planning and execution, this is your game. if you don't understand math and hate RNG, you might wanna skip it
