Avowed is an action role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios. The game is set in the world of Eora, the same universe as Pillars of Eternity. It was released for Windows and Xbox Series X/S on February 18, 2025, and for PlayStation 5 on February 17, 2026. The game received generally positive reviews from critics, but failed to meet the sales expectations of Xbox Game Studios.

Runs well on modern hardware.

Played this to completion on gamepass last year, bought it to finally do another playthrough, which I literally never do with games outside BG3 co-op. The simple fact that it supports 1st and 3rd person perspective really helps making a second playthough feel different. I found the story and lore really engrossing, to the point I was actively reading about half the books I found because I clicked with the PoE lore so well, despite never touching the series before. The characters are great, the side quests are on the whole fun and feel well integrated into the overall story, or at least the lore. Combat has some good variety, and exploration is a delight. This isn't a sandbox type game where every NPC is interactable, but the ones that are are usually very interesting, and a lot of the banter you can eavesdrop on while wandering a city can be just as engaging. The banter at camp between your companions is particularly stellar. I only have two real gripes with the game, but they were never dealbreakers. First, exploration can be hampered by some areas looking accessible in some way but are just set dressing, such as the "edges" of the map or certain buildings (Thirdborn is particularly egregious). Second, NPC reactivity is frustratingly inconsistent; you'll realize early on nobody gives a damn if you loot something in front of them, only to once in a great while be addressed/confronted by an NPC about it while on kleptomanic autopilot.
What a dissapointment of a game. Sure it's pretty, has wonderful UI and the base mechanics are very neat. However, from the makers of PoE and Deadfire they basically took 20 steps back into making a start up title. My Main Problems: - They took a big page from Veiguard with the dialogue, you have the illusion of choice but the NPCs dont care and you are the parties therapist - The enemies are consistently re-used - The loot is trash tier in quality and quanitity, 3 swords do the same thing just different elements. What a let down given that their old titles were the best at this - The story is meh at best - The companions are trash, you have 4 of them and they are completely 1 dimensional compared to Aloth, Eder even Palegina - You can't even customize or equip your companions they are p much useless in combat, you're doing everything - The boss fights are super ridiculously bad in design, nothing unique or cool - The maps are copy pase of each other in terms of content and mechanics just reskinned nothing that truly makes them unique from each other I could rant all day, but this is basically an adventure action game not at all what I would expect from Obsidian in terms of an RPG.
Fantastic, combat is a lot of fun and lots of playstyles
